South Africa beat Afghanistan by 9 wickets in Cardiff

Great bowling performances by Imran Tahir and Chris Morris who shared 7 wickets between them ensured South Africa beat Afghanistan by 9 wickets in the 21st match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 in Cardiff.

Having won the toss, South Africa won the toss and elected to bowl first. Afghanistan started well as the opening pair put on 39 runs for the first wicket before Zazai lost his wicket to Kagiso Rabada. The match was interrupted twice by rain which meant the play was restricted to 48 overs per side under DLS method.

Afghanistan have been prone to batting collapses in the tournament and it was not any different this time as the team collapsed from 56/2 to 77/7 in less than 10 overs. A little cameo at the end by Rashid Khan took the score past 100 and Afghanistan managed 125 in 34.1 overs.

In response, a strong opening stand of 104 runs between Hashim Amla and Quinton De Kock ensured South Africa chased the target easily in 28.4 overs to register their first win in the World Cup.

Imran Tahir was deservingly adjudged the player of the match for his terrific bowling.

Afghanistan will face England on 28th June at Old Trafford, Manchester in their next match of the tournament.
