New eligibility and selection criteria announced

Cricket Director, Basheer Stanikzai, Chief Selector Nawroz Mangal and members of selection committee Abdul Wali Amin and Ahmad Shah Sulemankhel, today announced ACB’s eligibility and selection criteria in a press conference for all four national teams; namely national side, A team, emerging team and U19 team.

Basheer Stanikzai said that the policy approved for player selection will be implemented at all levels and players will need to meet the minimum set requirements to be selected for national teams. According to Stanikzai, in order to make their way to one of the national teams, the player would be required to prove their fitness, discipline and performance.

Stanikzai explained that going forward, a player would need to be involved in cricket for 300 days annually for two consecutive years verified by the relevant club, association, provincial team or region. They would also need to provide their National ID card or Passport as a proof of identity. The players who represent Under-19 team must prove Afghanistan Citizenship or provide birth certificate for that matter.

He further added that the players would need to have played domestic cricket as part of Shpageeza Cricket League, Ghazi Amanullah Khan Regional One-Day (List-A) Tournament or Ahmad Shah Abdali First Class (Four-day) Tournament and obtain a minimum of grade A in either of the two formats. Stanikzai emphasized on the importance of fitness for players. He said that the player must go through a Yo Yo test before selection .The minimum score for national team selection is set at 17.3 and the limit for the Emerging team selection is set at 17.1 .

Chief selector, Nawroz Mangal also shed light on selection criteria and reiterated that fitness, discipline and performance are the three most important points. He said that those players who perform well in Emerging team, will be considered for selection in the A team. He also added that players who are out of the national team due to injuries or other fitness issues would need to play for the A team and earn their place in the national team based on good performance including all three format in domestic cricket. According to Mangal; players who sustain injuries and are advised 45 or more days of rest by health professionals, would also need to play for A team before reclaiming their place in the national team based on good performance.

Regarding the selection of Emerging team, Mangal added that only players whose ages are under 23 and have performed well at under-19 level and domestic cricket would be eligible for selection.
